5. Queer Lion Award: foreword and special events calendar

Queer Lion Award 2011

Foreword by Daniel N. Casagrande and colophon for the 2011 edition, news about the sponsors and press releases. In this section, all you need to know

Five is the magic number of this year’s edition: this is of the number of years that passed by since Queer Lion has been around, five the number of award plaques given out since, and five the number of patronages that this year are here as a result of months of hard work: for the first time ever, we have been granted the patronage from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and from the Province of Venice – thanks to, respectively, Minister MP Giancarlo Galan and Province president Francesca Zaccariotto – while have been confirmed the patronages from the Veneto Region – given for the first time by the new President MP Luca Zaia -, from the Venice Municipality – department of Cultural Activities – and from the National Union of Italian Cinema Critics.

As usual, even this year the movies in competition for our award, with GLBT elements, will be more or less ten, screening in all the sidebars of 68. Venice Film Festival. Among those competing for Queer Lion 2011: from the Orizzonti sidebar, the korean movie “Jultak Dongshi” (Stateless Things) by Kyung-mook Kim, from Portugal “Palaciós de pena”, co-directed by Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt; from United States the James Franco directed biopic “Sal”, tracing the life of Sal Mineo; from the International Critics’ Week we will have “Marécages”, from canadian director Guy Édoin, centered on the life of troubled teenager Jean and the discovery of his sexuality.

Again, from the Orizzonti sidebar, “Snow Cannon” from french director and actress Mati Diop; “Amore carne” from italian actor director screenwriter Pippo Delbono; and the most welcome of comebacks, the winner of Queer Lion 2010 Mauro Andrizzi, back in town with “Accidentes gloriosos”, co-directed with Marcus Lindeen.
We will have as well a special event: the movie “Children of His Life”, directed by talented Peter Marcias and awarded the Italian Golden Globe for best leading actress (Piera Degli Esposti), will be screened (free entrance) at the cinema Astra, in Venice Lido, on september 3rd.
Enjoy the show!
