The working session, which took place on\u00a0<strong>Monday<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>October 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a02019\u00a0<\/strong>in Venice<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>at La Biennale headquarters\u00a0at\u00a0Ca\u2019 Giustinian, was introduced by President\u00a0<strong>Paolo Baratta\u00a0<\/strong>and the Director of the Cinema Department\u00a0<strong>Alberto Barbera<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>In a new decision this year, La Biennale will increase the number of films it will support to\u00a0<strong>4 of the films in the selection<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>of which at least\u00a0<strong>2 must be directed by women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>Biennale College\u00a0Cinema<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">This is the programme by\u00a0<strong>La<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Biennale di Venezia\u00a0<\/strong>that cultivates young talents by offering them the opportunity to work side by side with the masters, to make feature-length micro-budget films. The\u00a0<strong>Biennale College\u00a0<\/strong>is an innovative and complex experience that\u00a0<strong>engages every Department of La Biennale di Venezia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>The international Calls of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0edition<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Of the 12 projects, 9 have been selected from the\u00a0<strong>Biennale College Cinema \u2013 International\u00a0<\/strong>call, and 3 from the Call of\u00a0<strong>Biennale College Cinema \u2013 Italia.\u00a0<\/strong>The Call for the latter was launched on February 20<sup>th<\/sup>, the international call on May 7<sup>th<\/sup>. A total of\u00a0<strong>190<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>applications<\/strong>\u00a0were submitted to the Calls. Overall, in the course of the 8 editions of the\u00a0<strong>Biennale College\u00a0Cinema<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>1.830<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>applications\u00a0<\/strong>have been received from every corner of the world.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>The first workshop of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0edition<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">The 12 teams that submitted the\u00a0<strong>selected\u00a0<\/strong>projects (consisting of a director and a producer), hailing from\u00a0<strong>Australia, Brazil, China, Finland, France, Italy, Macedonia, Portugal, Spain<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>United States<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>participated in a preliminary workshop that was held in Venice\u00a0<strong>from October 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0to 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a02019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>Presentation of the 12 projects of the 8<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0edition<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">In a working session\u00a0<strong>from 3 pm to 6 pm on Monday October 14<sup>th<\/sup>,\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>12 teams present their projects<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>offering a brief description of various aspects involved in the creation of their stories, their personal careers, their special influences and their vision of cinema.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>Selection of four projects to make four feature-length films<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Starting in\u00a0<strong>2019\/2020\u00a0<\/strong>the number of films that will enjoy the support of La Biennale is extended to\u00a0<strong>4 films in the selection\u00a0<\/strong>(of which\u00a0<strong>at least 2 must be directed by women<\/strong>). Following this presentation,\u00a0<strong>4 teams\u00a0<\/strong>will be invited to attend\u00a0<strong>two additional workshops<\/strong>, also to be held in Venice, in the months of December 2019 and January 2020, following which they will begin production on 4 feature-length films (debut or sophomore films) of which one will be Italian. The films will be low-cost, supported by a grant of 150 thousand euro, and will subsequently be presented at the\u00a0<strong>77<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Venice International Film Festival 2020.\u00a0<\/strong>The 8 projects that are not selected will also be assisted and supervised.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lb-page-content-wrap border\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-4 lb-page-aside\">\n<h4 class=\"lb-title\">THE 12 PROJECTS<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-md-8 lb-page-content\">\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>12 projects selected\u00a0<\/strong>for this first phase of the\u00a0<strong>Biennale College Cinema\u00a0<\/strong>are:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>La Calle Pura<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Alfredo Chiarappa (director, Italy), Angelo Rocco Troiano (producer, Italy)<br \/>\n<em>In day-to-day life, in the dreams and fears of Brian, a shy but determined Afro-Cuban boy in his late teens, who dreams of becoming one of Cuba\u2019s most famous singers, and in his relationship with his extended family, we can glimpse the future of the island 60 years after the Revolution.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>La Santa Piccola<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Silvia Brunelli (director, Italy), Francesca Maria Scanu (producer, Italy)<br \/>\n<em>Three teenagers live in a sunny neighbourhood in Naples, with only their tiny dreams. There is also a baby girl whom everyone calls \u201cthe holy baby\u201d because she sees the virgin Mary. She could be the one who brings a miracle to make their dreams come true, but that hope is just a lie that will end in summertime, while the neighbourhood awaits another new saint to believe in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Wizard of Fake<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Stefano Etter, Giovanni Greggio (director, Italy), Mattia De Marco (producer, Italia)<br \/>\n<em>A fake documentary about the greatest author of fake news.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Babado\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>&#8211;\u00a0<\/em>Camila Freitas (director, Brazil), Pedro Duarte<em>\u00a0(<\/em>producer, Portugal<em>)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cBabado\u201d is a term used by young people in the Amazonian tri-border of Brazil, Peru and Colombia to refer to multiple kinds of economic-sexual exchanges. Among these young people are the members of the Afro-Brazilian Umbanda temple of Father Jairo, a former transsexual sex worker like most of those he has initiated in the temple. In a constant experience of performativity, the group constantly adorns and reinvents their bodies: be it for the embodiment of entities in the rituals, be it for their work in the streets.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Fucking with Nobody<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/em>Hannaleena Hauru (director<em>,\u00a0<\/em>Finland), Emilia Haukka (producer, Finland)<br \/>\n<em>The lives of 5 characters working the Finnish Film Industry cross paths through one fake marriage project.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Good Job<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/em>Di Shen (director, China), Lizhi Chen (producer, China)<br \/>\n<em>The company is fake, the marriage is fake, the daughter is fake, but the life and love are real.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>He That Shall Not Be Named (Mon P\u00e8re, Le Diable)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/em>Ellie Foumbi (director, USA), Joseph Mastantuono (producer, France)<br \/>\n<em>An antisocial African refugee\u2019s quiet existence in a sleepy mountain town in the south of France is upended when she suspects that the new priest at her church is the warlord who slaughtered her family.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Housekeeping for Beginners<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Goran Stolevski (director, Macedonia), Marija Dimitrova (producer, Macedonia)<br \/>\n<em>A lesbian woman in Macedonia is forced to raise her dead partner\u2019s two daughters. In order to legally adopt them, she has to first convince her (gay, male) best friend to marry her. Like her, he never has and never will want to be a parent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Last Minutes<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Pedro Collantes (director, Spain), Daniel Rem\u00f3n (producer, Spain)<br \/>\n<em>\u201cLast Minutes\u201d tells the story of four different encounters taking place minutes before someone\u2019s departure from life. Each of these encounters happens to be the last human interaction one of the characters has before leaving this world. Unknowingly at death\u2019s door, the characters who populate the film experience rage, love, lust, tenderness, greed or empathy, witnesses of the blissfully ignorant passage of time to death.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Plant Under the Wild Land<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Diego Zon (director, Brazil), Ana Cristina Viegas (producer, Portugal)<br \/>\n<em>In the effort of his tired breathing, Antonio grows older between his plants growing on the terrace and the dusty VHS tapes that he often watches with Brando. One day, Antonio falls asleep.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Sound of Light<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Julietta Boscolo (director, Australia), Grayson Propst (producer, USA)<br \/>\n<em>A gifted teen singer &#8211;\u00a0too ashamed of her poor background to sing in public &#8211; masquerades as\u00a0middle class in order to win a singing competition and a chance at a fun new life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Violenta<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Juan Carlos Zaldiva alias Violenta Flores (director, USA), Gill Holland and Shaz Bennet (producers, USA)<br \/>\n<em>VIOLENTA is a 72-minute feminist art\/horror film about a vampire vigilante of ambiguous sex, who haunts the old quarter of a colonial city, as she struggles to attain closure with her biological mother and with a past rooted in domestic violence while feeding on those who exploit women, the poor and \u00a0the marginalized.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The 12 projects are documented on the website:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collegecinema.labiennale.org\/en\">http:\/\/collegecinema.labiennale.org\/en<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lb-page-content-wrap border\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-4 lb-page-aside\">\n<h4 class=\"lb-title\">THE INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-md-8 lb-page-content\">\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">The<strong>\u00a0Biennale College\u00a0Cinema<\/strong>, organized by\u00a0<strong>La\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Biennale di Venezia<\/strong>, enjoys the support of the\u00a0<strong>Ministry for the Cultural Heritage and Activities \u2013 General Direction Cinema<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0Biennale College\u00a0Cinema\u00a0<\/strong>is sponsored by\u00a0<strong>Universit\u00e0 Telematica Pegaso<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0Biennale College Cinema\u00a0<\/strong>relies on the academic collaboration of\u00a0<strong>IFP in New York<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>TorinoFilmLab<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The Director is\u00a0<strong>Alberto Barbera<\/strong>, Head of Programme is\u00a0<strong>Savina Neirotti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lb-page-content-wrap border\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-4 lb-page-aside\">\n<h4 class=\"lb-title\">THE FIRST WORKSHOP<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-md-8 lb-page-content\">\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Teamwork, plenary classes, individual sessions and exchanges of ideas: this was the programme of the first workshop for the\u00a0<strong>8<sup>h<\/sup>\u00a0edition of the Biennale College &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Cinema<\/strong>, which was held at San Servolo (Venice) from October 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0through 14<sup>th<\/sup>, curated by\u00a0<strong>Alberto Barbera\u00a0<\/strong>and the Team of the\u00a0<strong>Biennale College \u2013 Cinema\u00a0<\/strong>(<strong>Savina Neirotti<\/strong>, Head of Programme).<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">The 12 project teams worked closely with leading figures in international and Italian independent cinema. The goal was to discuss their projects and the experiences of low-budget filmmaking, meeting directly with the tutors and with the other teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Depending on their role, the tutors and consultants were given specific assignments and worked in different ways with the teams as a whole:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>&#8211;\u00a0 Group Leaders: Michele Turnure Salleo, Titus Kreyenberg, Scott Macaulay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Each of them coordinated the work of a group that included 4 different projects, working with the group as a whole, and directly with the individual teams assigned to them. Each group discussed every aspect of their projects in detail, making and receiving suggestions from the other teams, and putting together all the ideas that came up in the other sessions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>&#8211; Producer Consultants:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Amra Baksic Camo, Agustina Chiarino<\/strong><strong>, Samm Haillay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">The production issues for each project were discussed, taking advantage of each group\u2019s capabilities to share experiences and best practices in micro-budget filmmaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>&#8211; Script Consultants:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Eilon Ratzkovsky, Ossi Nishri, Fran\u00e7oise Von Roy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Each script consultant worked with 4 dedicated projects throughout the entire workshop and coached the teams in writing the step outline and the screenplay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>&#8211; 2 Experts: Paul Tyler and Alec Von Bargen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Both advisors concentrated on the visual aspects of the projects. Paul Tyler led an individual workshop with each team, the purpose of which was to build their projects as effectively as possible. Alec Von Bargen brought the participants his experience as an artist; he held individual sessions with each team, which helped them find the central visual theme for their project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>&#8211; Pitching Trainer: Stefano Tealdi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">In group and plenary sessions, the teams were assisted in developing a public presentation of their project, learning to describe the core of the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Specifically, the workshop programme was divided into several different activities, in which the teams worked in groups or together:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Group sessions:\u00a0<\/strong>three groups in all, consisting in four projects each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Team sessions:\u00a0<\/strong>with the assigned tutor; with each tutor individually and with the three tutors together;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>Case studies and lectures:\u00a0<\/strong>plenary sessions for all participants.<\/li>\n<li class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>Individual meetings with the tutor of a different group:<\/strong>\u00a0each team had the possibility to get feedback from tutors assigned to a different group.<\/li>\n<li class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>Writing:\u00a0<\/strong>opportunity for individual work or discussion within each single team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"lb-page-content-wrap border\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-4 lb-page-aside\">\n<h4 class=\"lb-title\">THE EDITIONS 2012-2019<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-md-8 lb-page-content\">\n<p>So far\u00a0<strong>22 feature-length films<\/strong>\u00a0have been made during the\u00a0<strong>first (2012\/2013), second (2013\/2014), third (2014\/2015), fourth (2015\/2016), fifth (2016\/17), sixth (2017-18)\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0seventh (2018-2019) editions\u00a0<\/strong>of the\u00a0<strong>Biennale College Cinema<\/strong>, and screened as world premieres respectively at the\u00a0<strong>70<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Venice International Film Festival\u00a0<\/strong>2013, at the\u00a0<strong>71<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0Venice International Film Festival\u00a0<\/strong>2014, at the<strong>\u00a072<sup>nd\u00a0<\/sup>Venice International Film Festival\u00a0<\/strong>2015, at the\u00a0<strong>73<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0Venice International Film Festival\u00a0<\/strong>2016, at the\u00a0<strong>74<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Venice International Film Festival\u00a0<\/strong>2017, at the\u00a0<strong>75<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Venice International Film Festival\u00a0<\/strong>2018, at the<strong>\u00a076<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Venice International Film Festival\u00a0<\/strong>2019 and later at other festivals, winning many awards and receiving excellent critical reviews.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>three films from<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0edition of the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Biennale College Cinema (2012-2013)<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><em>Memphis\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(USA) by\u00a0<strong>Tim Sutton<\/strong>\u00a0(director), produced by\u00a0<strong>John Baker,\u00a0<\/strong>participated in the Sundance Film Festival, the NEXT &lt;=&gt; competition, the Miami Film Festival, and the Sundance-London Film and Music Festival. In the USA, it was distributed in theatres in the summer of 2014 by Kino Lorber, in VOD for Vimeo one month after it was released and was shown on cable TV on the AMC\/Sundance Channel Global.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Thailand) by\u00a0<strong>Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit<\/strong>\u00a0(director), produced by\u00a0<strong>Aditya Assarat\u00a0<\/strong>, participated in the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, winning the Netpac Competition for Best Asian Film; the Busan International Film Festival, the Festival Internacional de Cine Valdivia, the Tokyo International Film Festival, the Torino Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Pan-Asia Film Festival, the Italian Film Festival &#8211; Special Venice Edition (Asian Showcase) in Singapore, the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival, the San Francisco International Film Festival. It also won 4 Thailand National Film Awards (out of 10): Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Editing; and 3 Bangkok Critics Assembly Awards (out of 9): Best Actress, Best Editing, Best Art Direction; it won 5 Kom Chad Luek Award nominations: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress. It was released in theatres in Thailand on November 28<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a02013, and in England and Ireland in the fall of 2014 (distributed by day-for-night).<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Yuri Esposito\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(Italy) by\u00a0<strong>Alessio Fava\u00a0<\/strong>(director), produced by\u00a0<strong>Max Chicco,\u00a0<\/strong>participated in the Stockholm International Film Festival and the Torino Film Festival, garnering excellent reviews.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>three films from the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0edition of the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Biennale College Cinema (2013-2014)<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><em>Blood Cells\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>by\u00a0<strong>Joseph Bull\u00a0<\/strong>(director,\u00a0<strong>Great Britain<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>Luke Seomore<\/strong>\u00a0(director,\u00a0<strong>Great Britain<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>Samm Haillay\u00a0<\/strong>(producer,\u00a0<strong>Great Britain<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>Ben Young\u00a0<\/strong>(producer, Great Britain), participated in the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2015. It was released in theatres in England and in Canada, and on many VOD platforms all over the world, including the United States and Italy.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>H.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Rania Attieh<\/strong>\u00a0(director,\u00a0<strong>Lebanon<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>Daniel Garcia<\/strong>\u00a0(director,\u00a0<strong>USA<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>Shruti Rya Ganguly<\/strong>\u00a0(producer,\u00a0<strong>India<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>Pierce Varous\u00a0<\/strong>(producer,\u00a0<strong>USA<\/strong>), won the Kiehl\u2019s Someone to Watch Award at the Independent Spirit Awards 2015. It participated in the Sundance Film Festival 2015 in the NEXT &lt;=&gt; competition. It also participated in the Berlin Film Festival 2015 in the Forum section. It won the Guanajuato Film Festival 2015. It was presented in other festivals such as the International Istanbul Film Festival, the Sarasota Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, the Nashville Film Festival, the Jeonju International Film Festival, the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Little Rock Film Festival. It was screened at the MoMA and distributed in theatres in New York in April 2016.\u00a0<strong>Rania Attieh won the Nora Ephron Award at Tribeca 2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Short Skin<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>Duccio Chiarini<\/strong>\u00a0(director,\u00a0<strong>Italy<\/strong>),\u00a0<strong>Babak Jalali<\/strong>\u00a0(producer,\u00a0<strong>Iran<\/strong>\/<strong>Great Britain<\/strong>), participated in the Generation 14plus competition of the Berlinale Generation section at the Berlin Film Festival 2015, and won the Ciak d\u2019oro 2015 for Best Debut Film.
