The\u00a056<\/strong>th<\/strong>\u00a0Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival<\/strong>\u00a0has unveiled its official selection for this year\u2019s international competition. The line-up comprises\u00a010 titles<\/strong>\u00a0from countries as various as Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Iran, Japan, Lebanon, Norway, Qatar, Rwanda, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Tunisia. The films will be competing in the Best Film and Best Director categories for total prize money worth\u00a0close to TL 100 thousand<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Wolfgang Becker to Head Jury<\/strong>
\nThis year\u2019s\u00a0International Feature Film Competition Jury<\/strong>\u00a0will be chaired by the German writer-director,\u00a0Wolfgang Becker<\/strong>. Becker made his directorial debut in 1988 with\u00a0Butterflies<\/em>\u00a0(Schmetterlinge<\/em>), which won the Golden Leopard at Locarno. He followed up this early success with the award-winning\u00a0Child\u2019s Play<\/em>\u00a0(Kinderspiele<\/em>) in 1992 and in 1997 with\u00a0Life Is All You Get<\/em>, which picked up the Special Jury Prize at Berlin. Six years later, he earned international acclaim for\u00a0Good Bye Lenin!<\/em>\u00a0(2003), which was nominated for numerous awards, including a Golden Globe, and won Best European Film of the Year at the Goya and C\u00e9sar Awards, as well as the Audience Award at the European Film Awards. Most recently, he ended a 12-year hiatus with\u00a0Me and Kaminski<\/em>, a comedy co-starring Daniel Br\u00fchl, Jesper Christensen, Denis Lavant and Geraldine Chaplin. This will be the first time the long-time director is hosted in Turkey.<\/p>\n

Wolfgang Becker<\/strong>\u00a0is joined on the jury by four more international names from the world of film:\u00a0R\u00fanar R\u00fanarsson<\/strong>,\u00a0Johanna ter Steege<\/strong>,\u00a0Ewa Puszczynska<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jay Jeon<\/strong>. Now recognized as one of Iceland\u2019s leading independent filmmakers, the writer-director,\u00a0R\u00fanar R\u00fanarsson<\/strong>, directed his first feature,\u00a0Volcano<\/em>, in 2011. His follow-up,\u00a0Sparrows<\/em>\u00a0(2015), was in the Official Selection at Cannes and picked up awards at San Sebasti\u00e1n, Thessaloniki and Warsaw Film Festivals, while his latest picture,\u00a0Echo<\/em>, left Locarno this year with the Youth Jury Award. The remarkable Dutch actress,\u00a0Johanna ter Steege<\/strong>, is known above all for her memorable performances in the Istv\u00e1n Szab\u00f3 classic,\u00a0Dear Emma, Sweet B\u00f6be<\/em>\u00a0(\u00c9des Emma, dr\u00e1ga B\u00f6be<\/em>, 1992), Robert Altman\u2019s\u00a0Vincent & Theo<\/em>\u00a0(1990), Szab\u00f3\u2019s\u00a0Meeting Venus<\/em>\u00a0(1991) and Bernard Rose\u2019s\u00a0Immortal Beloved<\/em>\u00a0(1994).\u00a0Ewa Puszczynska<\/strong>\u00a0of Poland has produced numerous films, among them Pawel Pawlikowski\u2019s Oscar-winning masterpiece,\u00a0Ida<\/em>\u00a0(2013), and most recently, the Oscar nominated\u00a0Cold War<\/em>\u00a0(2018). And\u00a0Jay Jeon<\/strong>, currently director of the Busan Film Festival, is effectively an overseas ambassador for South Korean cinema in his capacity as a producer and film critic.<\/p>\n

Turkish Premieres in Antalya<\/strong>
\nThe competition films not only promise Antalya film buffs the chance to watch the latest crop of award-winning talent all at once, but they will also be shown for\u00a0the first time in Turkey<\/strong>\u00a0at the\u00a056<\/strong>th<\/strong>\u00a0Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Beware of Children<\/em>\u00a0comes from the Norwegian director, Dag J. Haugerud, and was nominated for a Queer Lion at Venice<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0Reza Mirkarimi<\/strong>\u00a0ranks among Iranian cinema\u2019s leading directors and his latest film,\u00a0Castle of Dreams<\/em>, picked up a Crystal Simorgh at Fajr for Best Screenplay, as well as winning Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor Awards at Shanghai. Slovakian director,\u00a0Marko \u0160kop<\/strong>, won plaudits for his first film, Eva Nov\u00e1;\u00a0Let There Be Light<\/em>,<\/strong>\u00a0the follow-up, triumphed at Karlovy Vary this year, scooping both the Ecumenical Jury and Best Actor Awards.\u00a0Dominik Moll<\/strong>\u2019s thriller,\u00a0Only the Animals<\/em>, played in competition at the Venice Film Festival and brings together a star cast including Denis M\u00e9nochet, Damien Bonnard and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. Screening at Toronto,\u00a0Our Lady of the Nile<\/em>\u00a0marks the third feature from Afghan born French author and director,\u00a0Atiq Rahimi<\/strong>, whose novels \u2018The Patience Stone\u2019 and \u2018A Curse on Dostoevsky\u2019 have been translated into Turkish.\u00a0They Say Nothing Stays the Same<\/em>\u00a0sees popular Japanese actor,\u00a0Joe Odagiri<\/strong>, return behind the camera after a 10-year absence; this, his second feature, premiered at Venice and has been widely hailed for the magical camera work of cinematographer, Christopher Doyle.\u00a0Those Who Remained<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0Barnab\u00e1s T\u00f3th<\/strong>\u2019s lyrical adaptation of Zsuzsa F. V\u00e1rkonyi\u2019s novel, which has been selected as his native Hungary\u2019s official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2020 Academy Awards. And\u00a0Sandra Kogut<\/strong>\u2019s comedy,\u00a0Three Summers<\/em>, screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at Toronto and stars prominent Brazilian actress, Regina Cas\u00e9, in the lead.<\/p>\n

The remaining two titles in this year\u2019s International Feature Film Competition selection stand out as award-winning debuts. The first is Tunisian director,\u00a0Mehdi Barsaoui<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0A Son<\/em>, which left this year\u2019s Venice Film Festival with the Horizons Award for Best Actor. The second,\u00a0The Diary of Diana B<\/em>, was written and directed by Croatian video artist and documentary filmmaker,\u00a0Dana Budisavljevi\u0107<\/strong>. Based on a diary kept during World War II, the docudrama won Best Film and Best Director nods at the Pula Film Festival.<\/p>\n

The winners of the International Feature Film Competition will be announced at the Festival\u2019s\u00a0Closing and Awards Ceremony<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0November 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
