The film, which hit screens back in 2019, tells the dark story about affections and loyalties between prisoners during the political upheaval of Chile in the 1970s.
Other themes covered in the film are the search for sexual identity, love, violence, and power.
It received an award at the Queer Lion Award at Venice Film Festival, despite the mature and explicit content.
Amazon a receive a portion of the money earned by distributors who upload films to the platform themselves.
However, The Prince’s distributor Peccadillo Pictures have reportedly violated Amazon’s content policy guidelines, which contain rules against ‘sexually explicit content’ and ‘violent or graphic content.’
They are struggling to reverse the decision and Peccadillo MD Tom Abell told Deadline they do not understand the streaming service’s choice to ban the flick.
“We are obviously very concerned and perplexed by Amazon’s ruling”, he explained.
“We have been trying to overturn their decision without avail and cannot understand why, when we have overwhelming support from all other platforms, they have taken this stance.”
He continued: “We cannot deny that The Prince has some explosive and bold scenes but this is what makes it stand out and is such an enjoyable and admired film.
“It certainly contains nothing that hasn’t been seen before in a prison drama and pales in comparison to scenes in many of Amazon’s own productions.
“We are something of a loss to explain the situation.”
